OWATONNA - It's OK for someone to gloat when they win a game of marbles.
Marbles is the only game where gloating is acceptable, Tom Fletcher told children at the Owatonna Public Library on Wednesday. Fletcher, a toy store owner from St. Paul, showed children how to play the ancient game.
Cameron Wright, 9, and many other children have been earning marbles this summer through the library's summer reading program. He didn't know how to play marbles until Wednesday, however.
Though marbles can be played many different ways, Fletcher and children's librarian Darla Lager showed children one way they can play marbles. Players put 10 small marbles inside a circle and then use a large marble, called a shooter, to try to knock other marbles out of the circle.
The first player to knock one more marble than they put in wins.
Fletcher said people who speak different languages can play marbles together, and he has seen shy children become more self-confident after playing marbles.
"Once they start playing all of their pride comes to the forefront," said Fletcher.
Lager said children have come to the library to play marbles but it has mostly amounted to knocking marbles around.
Tamra Gonzalez came to the library Wednesday with her nephew Garrison Jackson. Gonzalez teaches kindergarten at McKinley Elementary School and said she might incorporate marbles into classes next year.
After watching Fletcher's demonstration, Lauren Stewart, 11, played a few games of marbles with her brother Evan Stewart, 9. She said she has played marbles at school and with her grandfather.
"Sometimes we play with my grandpa and if we win marbles we get to keep them," Stewart said.
Fletcher also went to the Blooming Prairie library on Wednesday. According to Fletcher, libraries are good places to teach children how to play marbles because they are places people go to learn things.
The Owatonna library will hold a marble tournament for children ages 6 - 12 next Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 10:30 a.m. Children can continue to earn marbles through the summer reading program through Aug. 31.
