Vintage and out of print (copyright 1949), this is a thoroughly enjoyable read for any marble collector. There was one thing Tip wanted more than anything else - to learn to play marbles well. The story tells not only how he learned to play, but how he became assistant to a professional magician. Incidentally, that helped with the marbles. The book is full of fascinating information about marbles, but this is secondary to a fast-moving story with good characterization. I cannot emphasize enough how much I, a passionate marble collector, enjoyed this story. It really conveys how, once-upon-a-time, a children's world revolved around these beautiful orbs that I now enjoy collecting so much. I shared Tip's excitement when he found an old cigar box of marbles belonging to his friend the magician - A bear sulphide, an onionskin, a peppermint swirl, Chinas, Commies and the "Shining Shooter" - a realie agate! Tip goes on to win the tournament and it was as thrilling as if I had been there myself. If you are passionate about marbles, this book will only serve to make you more so!

A trip back to your childhood Marbles world 8/7/2012

This is one of the few Marbles centric books I have discovered over the years. If you loved to play Marbles as a child, grew up in the 1950'-60's, or you are fascinated by the childhood culture of bygone days. This is a must have. As I read the book I was transported back to the happier days of my Marbles playing epoch in La Habra, Ca. I could smell the grass, hear the shouts of excited children, and feel the warm southern California sunshine once more. The feel of that real Agate "Shining Shooter" was back. Nothing like it. I have two copies of this book. Get yours!

I collect any book about marbles, and this is a favorite. As a collector, I really enjoyed reading about the vintage marbles I collect in the context of the every day life of a kid in the mid 20th Century. Thoroughly enjoyable, I reccomend it highly!
