Setup the basic rules for the Good Job! Jar with input from everyone involved...suggestions are as follows:
- How are marbles earned? Two marbles are earned or lost each time, one large marble is rewarded periodically for exceptional behavior.
- Doing chores
- Showing kindness to others
- getting ready for school on time
- How are marbles lost?
- interrupting while an adult is speaking
- Not completing chores
- Hitting others
- How many to get a reward? Rewards should be based on a specific number of marbles earned or reaching a certain level (draw target lines) on the jar. Create a list of rewards from which the child can choose and post the list near the Good Job! Jar.
- What will the rewards be? Rewards need to be meaningful and age appropriate.
Hints:
- The key to success of this reward system is consistency and verbal praise accompanying the marble rewards.
- Keep the Good Job! Jar in a centrally located place as a constant visual reminder.
- Let the child choose the marbles they earn and have the child drop them in the jar. When marbles are "lost," the child should be instructed to remove the marbles from the jar.
- Keep marbles handy in the "Good Job! marbles" pouch.
