    Re: New Article Archive Added!!

Well you'll be happy to here I have them intact, just making some changes to the page, but is still online. I have also been continuing to collect articles of interest, and have dozens of new pieces that will be added once it's online again.

    Here's a link to it:

and hopefully soon it will be tied into the rest of the site, as well as other content pages I once had. I need to do a lot of reformatting to fit the new LOM.com template, and I can't help but tweak things in other ways while I'm working on it...

Here's one of the saved articles, to whet your appetite:

That marvelous game of marbles a friendly one

    By ANNA MARIA BASQUEZ
The Daily Sentinel, a Grand Junction CO newspaper

    Saturday, April 19, 2008

Katie O’Banion took on the defending national marbles champion and beat him at several friendly practice matches at Lincoln Park on Saturday. Then she put herself in position to become a national champion.

Nick Anderson, 13, can’t compete officially again after already winning a national title, so he helped prepare O’Banion to nearly double the score of her closest competitor and earn the top score during Saturday’s Marbles Finals Tournament.

O’Banion, 13, and her brother Jake, 11, both of Clifton, won the first-place girl and boy trophies, respectively, competing against eight other top qualifiers from around the state.

The two will go to the national tournament in Wildwood, N.J., in June along with two other finalists from Colorado.

“It’s unique,” Katie O’Banion said of the competition prior to her last match. “Not a lot of people do it, and you can end up going really far in it.”

This year will be the 85th anniversary of the national marbles competition, showing that marbles isn’t just a way children in 1920s movies killed time on the sidewalks before a Major League Baseball game.

To marbles enthusiasts, of whom there are at least 20 in the local Colorado Marbles club, this is the game.

But a friendly competitive one, at that, said Leah Lee, who has been teaching kids to play marbles for 16 years.

“This is such a friendly sport,” Lee said. “We focus so much on sportsmanship and caring about the other players. They choose to practice. They aren’t forced to.”

O’Banion and her brother, Jake, chose to put to good use the yellow marbles ring their parents purchased for them two years ago.

Since then, Katie has advanced to nationals, where she placed eighth last year. She said she wants to finish first this year and devotes two to three hours daily to practicing.

“They have to be able to hit 50 percent of all marbles they shoot at to be here,” Lee said. “That’s a tough one to do.”

The second-place finishers, Sarah Kem of Clifton and Kyle Kraby of Palisade, also advanced to nationals.

Nick, meanwhile, will be among those traveling to nationals this year to be inducted into the National Marbles Hall of Fame.
