2007 British and World Marbles Championship

Held every Good Friday, The British and International Marbles Championship went off flawlessly at 10:30 Am this morning. Forget the Masters; this was where the champions were today.

Sixteen teams from England, Scotland, Germany and Holland competed in 5 stages to be crowned this years world Champs. Marbles have been played on this location for hundreds of years, some say since 1588 when two local lads played for the hand of a young lady. The formal championships started in 1932 and 1936 The British Marbles Board of Control was formed and runs the tournament today.

Prizes are awarded for best team, Individual champions, best lady player, and one award to a player who has never won anything. The pictures below are: #1 The lavish promotional billboards outside the Greyhound Pub, #2 The reigning world champions from Germany..The Murmelclub from Bitburg #3 Some action shots #4 Some cheers from the home team, The Tinsley Tigers #5 More action and #6 is some of the practice pitches set up behind the pub.

I believe the Germans won again, but by the end of the day…players and referees had a lot to drink, so I will chase down who won tomorrow.

Enjoy the photos and I think we should consider fielding an American Team next year…shoot me an email if interested…

Hey Duffy,.. that's how they drive in Europe, opposite of us. I also enjoyed the pics. Neat set up and their weather seems to be much nicer than what we are currently experiencing.

Pretty cool! I'm 'planning' a marble court in my backyard for the grandkids and I see I don't need the larger diameter suggested for Ringer. Looks like 6' is good enough!

Few Answers..comments...Beers are drunk by players and spectators, which seperated the "men from the boys" by the third or fourth rounds. Cars drive on the left side of the road only in the United Kingdom...rest of europe is all right side driving.

Each of the marble pitches is covered with "sharp" sand..used by gardeners, and acts as a bit of a buffer.

I did read that there is a US championship...In Maryland in August..is that accurate or does it move around the states?

Two tournaments that I'm aware of.

The US Tournament in August in Maryland - here's a link to that

Then there's the Wildwood, New Jersey Tournament that has gone on for years. Here's a link or two for that:

And they have their vampires somewhat under control.
