    Kansas City Marble Crazy 2008

Ok, So I went to the room trading Friday afternoon on the invite from Craig Snider, President of the KC Marble Collectors Club. I only had 5 hours and I'm sure not everyone was there.

Let me start by saying, What a Great bunch of Guys & Gals! Everyone was very very nice and showed me marbles that I could only dream of owning.

The First guy there I met was Charles Williams, He had Killer brag boxes and Marbles for sale. He lives near me in Missouri and I hope that when I become a member we will have a opportunity to talk more. Very nice wares and a genuinely nice guy. Charles is on the left and I believe the gentlemans name on the right is Terry (another very nice guy and fellow Harley rider).

Sorry I didn't get closer pics of marbles. I didn't get my memory card and only had room for 21 pics

Next was Vern Holm, He was as genuine as they get. He gave me loads of info and tips. Great Marbles in every room.

Last but not least was Craig Snider, It was a real pleasure meeting Craig, Fantastic guy, Awesome Marbles and the boxes he makes for showing are amazing! He has a brag box with a clear top that was a real showcase, I'm assuming the Plexiglas protected the Marbles from drool. The show box that he put together is a must have, I will have pictures of that Sunday.

Thanks Craig for the Great time!

Those are the most incredible array of filled company boxes I ever saw at a show. The small Master box was amazing. I also never saw a whole group of the old Czech marbles either, it took me years before I saw even one. What a pleasure your photos are, thank you!

Dan, do you happen to know if all of Craig's boxes are drawn from actual company designs?

The Vitro ones are very unfamiliar to me.

(very cool no matter what ... he's an artist!!)

I was told that some are Kinda like Fantasy boxes that he made up using old photo's and artwork. Some are original design. They are contemporary boxes with vintage marbles. Craig may stop buy and clarify on that. They are very beautiful, he really does a fine job on them.

Thanks for the report and the pictures. I hope you picked some boxes from Charles. He is one of the best craftsman to do these kind of boxes. Actually all my boxes came from him.

Thanks For the Pic's Terry! I was so sad that I didn't make it Sunday, I was certain that it lasted till 5pm and after running errands and everything that was going on that day my plan was foiled! I was really happy to meet you and everyone else, what a great experience! I won't mess up next time. heh.

    Sami,

I plan on buying a few as soon as I get spending money this spring, Charlie's boxes are really really beautiful.

    KC Show Report

In a nutshell (maybe where I belong); WOW! In my nine years of collecting I've been to 20 shows in seven different venues, and the KC Show on last Sunday was the best public show it has been my privilege to attend. It was a fun-filled day, full of smiling kids of all ages and sizes; some in strollers and some in wheelchairs, all looking, some buying, some selling, and everybody having what the late great Al Maguire called a "seashells and balloons" day. Well over 400 adults and at least 80-100 kids (Craig Snider estimated over 600 total!!) came flowing in all day for the fun; lots of door prize drawings, marble games, and table after table of gorgeous glass of all ages. The huge ballroom was filled with everything from Geoff Beetem's latest Mars creation (stunning) to a huge Popeye display, magnificent clouds floating out of Germany's past, and ethereal creations from Filip Vogelpohl, Mark Kornbluh, Kris Parke, Hothouse Glass; there were Peltiers out of galaxies both blue and green, Bruce Breslow's omnipresent, infectious, full Moon Marble grin, Wayne Sanders gorgeous old agates, club stalwarts Charles Williams, Rocky & Sherri Rollheiser, and most especially, Scott McBride's virtuoso stand-up comedy performance on the mic, announcing in that booming baritone the door prize winners and contests, keeping everybody loose & laughing with wit, wisdom and general wackiness. Wild & crazy, that guy - one of my heroes!

I was busy at my table from 9 to 3, and even stayed until 4 to make another sale. I bought some great deals that came in off of the street, sold some good ones, and talked marbles non-stop the entire time. I cleaned out my card holder. I almost ran out out of the free marbles I give kids. I had five pieces of candy left out of an overflowing basket. What a day!!

In room trading for me was very good; both buying and selling. Being by myself I didn't get out and about as much as I would have liked, but people found their way to me with money and and marbles. In short, as usual, I saw things at this show I had never seen before; marbles I never knew existed! Oh, what joy...

If you can possibly make it to this show next year, by all means do so. Craig Snider, the club president, and Bruce Breslow, get the publicity necessary to bring people in; TV, radio, and newspaper coverage before and during the show. With the activities at the Moon (John McCormick's marble machine demos were a great hit; and what a genuinely nice guy!), the Marble Museum tour, the in-room trading, the best public show in the land, and Kansas City itself (great BBQ & casinos - yeehaw!) this should be on your "must do" list folks.

To all my friends that were at the show, both new and old; thanks for everything. You made it a great week!! Marbles are great, but the people who collect them are among the true gems in my life...

    - Royal Morse

PS - "Justme" Dan is a true, gentle man; such a peaceful soul and spirit! It was a joy to meet you and share some thoughts; until the next time...
