    Is this rust?

    Hi All,
I have about 200 marbles in my life all of a sudden. I suspect some are collectible after a bit of research. I am befuddled by the orange rusty looking stuff on many of them. I don't know if steelies were stored with them or not. I don't think so...so I have no idea why they would rust. Tried water and dishsoap with no results. It scratches of a little when I scrap it with my nail...but that will take forever.

These ones with rust I bought them in a glass Ball jar at antique store. I'm uploading an image of a green one with some swirls to show you the orangy rust looking coating I am speaking about. I don't want to damage them so I'm kind of scared to try anything but soap and water until I know what each marble is and what kind of cleaning it can tolerate.

OK..pic is just example of one type with rust? on it.

Thanks for any help. I posted about cleaning issue on a general forum somewhere and cannot locate it so forgive me for reposting same issue here...before this I had no image though. This forum seemed more appropriate for my question anyway.

    Thanks,
    Kelechim

    Re: Is this rust?

Hi, I asked the same question in another Marble ID thread, and just noticed they had answered "CLR". "Calcium, Lime, Rust". But honestly, it did not remove the rust on the marble I'm showing in my pics. This is a Peltier, and had pretty heavy rust on it from sitting in a metal can for a long time. Although I would not try this on your Guinea or Handmade, I went ahead and tried Scotchbrite on it, and the rust came right off. I do not see any scratching on the marble surface, but you might try it out on something "cheap" first, then see what you think for yourself. I've posted before and after pictures of the Peltier.

Try 0000 EXTRA FINE Steel wool. I use it to get all the water spots and calcium build up. I use it with CLR.
