Here's a set up that works for alot of different types of marbles and one that's similar to what a lot of people use.

whoa whoa hold it. that isn't a cat's eye. a cat's eye is clear with several colored planes in the middle.

Lizzy, what are the approximate dimensions of that box? And about how big are the holes? I might try to make one of those myself. Our bookstore sells black foam board, so I can probably use that, and skip the painting step.

    Thanks!
    Gary

PS What is that marble in the sample? Is it one of yours? Gorgeous! G

Re: ?Best pic of Cat's Eye's?

For cats, the best suggestion I can make is to set the marble(s) on a clear surface or a clear ring. Cats need to have some light flow all around them (including the underside) to get the base glass to light up properly. I've used a piece of clear acrylic with divots drilled into it for group shots--the base doesn't have to be very thick, either--just enough to get the cat'e-eye off the surface so it doesn't cast a shadow under itself.

Hi Gary---Sorry it took me a while to answer your question. Have had a bad case of the flu and everything hurt, even my eyeballs! LOL Trying to get caught up on emails, marble boards, etc. now.

The set up belongs to the artist, Jane Walker. Here's her website. http://murl.se/11796 I've got some of her miniature marbles that she sent me in a marble swap. The marble in the picture is one that she made. It looks like it is a Lutz swirl. You can see some other examples of her marbles in that link above.

I'm not sure about the dimensions in her set-up. The main thing that I was trying to show was just the basic concept. Here's the set up that Bill Tow posted on another board. (another marble maker and collector-----takes beautiful pics, as does Galen. )

Re: ?Best pic of Cat's Eye's?

Thanks, Lizzy! I've been fooling with different setups myself--I think I've got one that works, but I'm always looking to improve it. One thing I have figured out is that I like to use a neutral gray card as a background. I can white balance against it (both with the camera and later in Photoshop), and it helps the camera figure out the correct exposure more accurately. It also tends to set off almost any color of marble (not a lot of neutral gray out there!). Photography is another of my hobbies, and I like being able to combine it with my marbles.
