Re: Most you have ever shelled out for a single marble?

I have to agree it is the hunt that makes it the most fun, regardless of cost. I rarely pay retail but mostly buy from Marblealan when I do. (Althgough I did pay a certain woman some good $ in Sisterville last year...)
I usually try to pay around 30 cents on the dollar so I am ahead of the game to begin with.

seriously though, I agree with Dave and Schmooz, alot of the fun is in the hunt (and the horse trading)
I know I'm probably missing out on some good buys, but I havent hit the ebay bid button in over 3 years...
who woulda thunk it?...loL

I paid $475.00 for a mint golden rebel and six mint killer miller swirls at the Santa cruz show. I couldn't believe I was doing it but I think It will all work out,I had to have them.

Gave this one some thought...pretty sure I haven't cleared the $300 boundary yet. Have this notion in my head it's some sort of soft spending cap on marbles. Took a crack at a a crystal brick Alan had way back in an RR auction for something like $1200 but couldn't take it home after it jumped past $1400 or so. Wish now that I would have kept plugging away but oh well. Nothing even close to that since.

Re: Most you have ever shelled out for a single marble?

I like eveyone that collects marbles loves the hunt hoping to find that killer marble on the cheap. There are some marbles that are just impossible to find in the wild and I've been looking for years. LOL The most I've paid for a sIngle marble is $1250 for a mint Peltier green galaxy/green rebel. I've never regretted this purchase because I thought it was a decent price on a killer marble that I've only seen three of.....ever.

Re: Most you have ever shelled out for a single marble?

Wow.. after reading all these posts, I think I'd want to buy at least ONE expensive marble in my lifetime so I can have something to show off..

Does anyone know what the most expensive marble sold thus far in history? I can only imagine..

Last year a 1 5/8 Naked Razor Ribbon Core hand made sold for
$13,000+ a 22% buyers preium. At Morphy's auction house.

There are a few Bird Cage handmades that are close to that price.

Re: Most you have ever shelled out for a single marble?

When I started collecting I spent very little, very cautious etc. Then I got bolder and I used to say I would never pay over $200 for a marble. Well when I finally did break the $200 barrier it was like taking my finger out of a hole in the dike. Les Jones used to kid me about it. I won't say what was the most I've paid but the most I've paid on Ebay was $2500 for a mint 2-1/8" black clam. The marble I regret selling the most was a 13/16" smokey opalescent translucent base banded lutz with yellow bands. I paid $225 and sold it for $2500. WHY WHY WHY.
As for the highest price I've seen a marble sell for was an incredible big cloud that brought $15k+ including buyers premium.
I still love to find something unusual or that just catches my fancy in the $5 bin but that is much harder to do than it used to be.

This Marble has outstanding provenance. Mike Clum sold this marble at auction for John Lindeman in the summer of 1986. It went to Dr. Art Ward for just over $1000. I bought it from the Doc that fall for $1800 cash & 3 reptile sulfides. Gary Dolly bought it from me in 2002. It was part of a multi marble deal that made us both very happy.

When I was the curator of the marble I contacted Mr. Lindeman and spoke with him about the marble and others in his collection.

Quote:
He said:
"I remember the ribbon core very well. Mother always liked the sulfides best, but I couldn't find her one, so I bought the swirl instead."
I bet whoever has it now is proud to own it- it is a very beautiful marble.

Bill says:
I won't say what was the most I've paid
This isn't the most I ever paid for a marble. Like Bill, I'm not saying how much the most I ever paid for a marble was.

The reason?

My wife READS the Chats.
